My first genealogy blog

My first genealogy blog ever and it’s hard to know where to start. My interest in genealogy and family history started 17 years ago. By now I have a comprehensive tree on www.ancestry.com.au, I have a website www.thornetreegenealogy.com.au, I’m writing a book about my great great grandmother Anastasia Maher and her Descendants, I’m organising a family reunion to launch the book, I run genealogy workshops in Adelaide, South Australia and I’m trying to figure out how to make a living from all this Genealogy.

I use social media to connect with the Descendants of Anastasia Maher via a Facebook page I set up at www.facebook.com/groups/DescendantsAnastasiaMaher.  We have over 80 members, most of which are Anastasia’s descendants and we share memories, photos, stories and new connections with lost relatives. I have members who contribute to the book and others who do a lot of leg work by accessing archives in their local area and finding relatives in their community. I hope to run a workshop in my local area later in the year on how to organise a family reunion using social media and subscription genealogy websites.

Last year for the first time I ran three genealogy workshops in Adelaide. My first ever workshop, which I composed and ran was at The Hut, Stirling after I applied for the position of Volunteer Family History. The second workshop was at the Reynella Community Centre where I received the biggest turn out and the third workshop was held at Coromandel Valley Community Centre. By the third series of workshops I had refined my format and delivery and now I shall use that same workshop at other locations in 2015. The first of which is back at The Hut, Stirling in February 2015. I’m pleased to say that it covers “the 6 most valuable steps to take towards building your family tree before you make any financial outlay”.

Much of the research I do I build into my Ancestry.com family tree. I am totally addicted to using this site and I try to get as much out of the resources it holds as I can. I consider myself an intermediate to advanced user and I would love to help others do the same.  So much so, that I am running an Ancestry.com workshop for beginners at the Reynella Neighbourhood Centre on 27 February 2015. If you would like to attend please email me on thornetreegenealogy@hotmail.com

Thornetree Genealogy is the name of my fledgling Genealogy business. I hope to connect with potential clients and help them reach their goal of publishing their Family History to digital eBooks. I’d like to help them access all resources and then assist them to compile an interesting story that ultimately goes to the printer and the eBook readers. If this sounds like you please email me on thornetreegenealogy@hotmail.com
